What I do

I cut hedges. I reduce overgrown ones. I advise on replacing the ones that have to go.

That's it. No tree surgery, lawn care, fencing, or the rest of the garden-services bundle. Hedges are a craft worth being good at; I keep the focus narrow so I am.

Georgian understatement

Deal earned the Sunday Times Best Places to Live UK listing in 2019 and again in 2022, the only Kent entry both years, for "proper old-fashioned charm." The Georgian terraces on Middle Street set the standard for that. I try to work to it. Clipped lines where a villa in Upper Walmer wants clipped lines. Cottage looseness where a fisherman's terrace on Beach Street wants cottage looseness. Not the same hedge; not the same job.

Why local matters here

Deal is not on the Thanet chalk. It's shingle and Holocene alluvium over the Richborough Syncline. Middle Street is Kent's first conservation area (1968). Several CAs cover Deal, Walmer and Kingsdown, and some of them have Article 4 directions that catch front-facing works. Kingsdown clifftop butts the Dover to Kingsdown Cliffs SSSI. The Walmer beach and villa boundaries take a battering from cold Channel easterlies: Tamarix and Olearia traversii thrive; beech and yew scorch. A contractor from Thanet or inland Kent won't know any of that without being told.

How I work

• Photos and postcode for an initial quote. I can give a fixed price for most routine cuts without coming out. Reductions usually need a site visit (free, no obligation).
• Fixed-price quotes. No day-rate creep. If the job runs longer than I expected, that is my problem, not yours.
• Conservation-area paperwork handled. If your address needs a section-211 notice to Dover District Council, I file it. Cost included in the quote.
• All arisings cleared. Environment Agency upper-tier waste-carrier registration. Clippings go to the Dover Recycling Centre at Honeywood Road, Whitfield (van permit and slot booking already handled), or get chipped. Never burned on site.
• Bank transfer or cash. Invoice or receipt either way.
• Photos on completion. Useful for DFL owners running Deal as a second home from London on the HS1 line.

What you won't get

• A salesman trying to upsell you a "garden makeover."
• A quote that doubles when I arrive.
• A botched cut to compensate for not telling you the hedge actually needs a reduction.
• Griselinia recommended for the front line just because the nursery had a pallet in.
