What I do

Four services. Clear pricing. No upselling.

Every quote includes the conservation-area paperwork if your address needs it, and every job leaves with all the arisings cleared. Specified for Deal shingle and coastal alluvium (not Thanet chalk — the Richborough Syncline dips it under the Thanet Sand), salt-laden easterlies off the Channel, and the RHS H5 seafront exposure at Beach Street, Walmer and Kingsdown.

Routine hedge cutting

Annual or twice-yearly cuts on privet, box, euonymus, laurel, escallonia and tamarisk. Clean formal lines on Walmer villas, looser cottage-shape on Middle Street strips, all arisings cleared on-site.

Pricing & timing

Height & width reduction

Heavier reductions on leylandii, laurel, escallonia and tamarisk. Staged where the species needs it. Leylandii does not regenerate from brown wood, so a two-year plan is the honest answer.

How reduction works

Hedge removal & stump work

Full removal with stump work and shingle or alluvial-clay reinstatement. CA tree-check first, six-week s.211 notice to DDC where any stem is 75mm or over at 1.5m.

What removal involves

New hedge planting

Salt-tolerance ranked from front-line Tamarix and Olearia through to inland Mill Hill beech and yew. The species logic that decides what actually thrives on the Deal seafront.

Why the species choice matters so much here

Deal is not on the Thanet chalk. The Richborough Syncline dips the chalk down under the Thanet Sand, so the surface is Holocene shingle at the seafront and coastal alluvium a street back. Sharp drainage on top, waterlogged clay below, salt-laden easterlies off the Channel, RHS H4 to H5 exposure, roughly 824mm of rain a year — drier than the UK average.

That combination fails beech and yew on Beach Street and the Walmer seafront (leaf scorch and a high water-table clay subsoil) but thrives them inland at Mill Hill and Sholden. Salt-tolerance rank in order: Tamarix and Olearia traversii at the top, then Escallonia, Griselinia littoralis, Euonymus japonicus, Pittosporum, Olearia macrodonta. Walmer Castle's own planting is the local evidence — holm oak front line, beech and ash and chestnut behind.

Conservation-area coverage is dense. Seven CAs across Deal and Walmer, including Middle Street (Kent's first, 1968), Upper Deal (2019 appraisal), South Barracks (1997), Nelson Street (2017), Upper Walmer (1977) and the Kingsdown CA (1970, extended 1994 and 2016). DDC carries 55 Article 4 directions across its 57 CAs, so front-facing boundary-wall or railing changes on the back of a hedge job trigger a planning route. Any tree with a stem 75mm or over at 1.5m needs a six-week s.211 notice to Dover District Council — I file it as standard.
