Hedge diseases and pests in Deal and Walmer: how to spot box blight, honey fungus and the rest before they spread.
Most of the Deal and Walmer hedges I see that are struggling do not have a cutting problem. They have a disease or a pest that was not spotted early enough, or was misidentified as drought stress or salt burn, and given time when it needed action. A comparison of the six most common problems in CT14 coastal gardens, with symptoms, risk seasons and what to do first.
The CT14 coast is not the easiest growing environment. Salt wind off the Downs Road channel, sandy or shingle-based soil in many seafront gardens, and the run of mild, wet winters Kent has seen since 2022 together create conditions where certain fungal diseases spread faster than they would inland. Box blight, for instance, thrives in warm, humid air. Honey fungus advances fastest in waterlogged ground. Understanding which problem you are looking at changes what you do in the first 48 hours.
I have put box blight and honey fungus first in the table because they are the two I am asked about most often on CT14 gardens, and both carry a risk of total loss of a hedge section if the first response is wrong. The others are more manageable but still worth knowing.
Before you cut anything: safety when treating hedge diseases
Treatment of most hedge diseases involves removing affected growth. Before you start:
- Eye protection. Flying debris from powered tools, and spores disturbed when cutting back diseased material, make glasses or a visor worth wearing every time.
- Gloves. Fungal spores transfer on hands. Wash gloves after handling diseased material. Do not compost clippings from a diseased hedge: bag and bin them.
- Blade hygiene. Sterilise secateurs or shears between cuts when removing box blight or any other fungal infection. A wipe with methylated spirits or diluted bleach between each cut stops the blade spreading the problem further along the hedge.
- Wasp nests. Walk the hedge line before starting. Dense growth on a diseased hedge can conceal wasp nests inside the internal voids. If you find one, leave it and call a pest controller before doing anything else.
- Ladder caution. Work from the ground where the hedge height allows. A long-reach pruning saw is safer than a ladder and handsaw on anything above shoulder height.
The comparison: six common problems in CT14 hedges.
Six diseases and pests that I regularly encounter on Deal, Walmer and Kingsdown hedges, ordered roughly by how much damage the wrong first response can cause. Full notes on each follow the table.

Box blight: the one to take most seriously on a Deal garden.
Box hedges are common along Middle Street, the terrace gardens off Golden Street, and the older roads in central Deal and Walmer. They are formal, low and slow-growing, and box blight can strip a section in a matter of weeks in a warm, wet June.
The two fungi responsible, Cylindrocladium buxicola and Volutella buxi, spread most readily on water: overhead irrigation, rain splash from the soil surface, and the moisture trapped inside a dense, closely-clipped box shape are all routes of spread. The first sign is usually a tan or brown patch that appears after a humid period. If you part the growth and find a white, powdery or furry coating on the underside of the leaves alongside black streaking on the stems, that is box blight rather than drought stress or salt burn.
The response that matters most is blade hygiene. I have seen a homeowner clip along the full length of a box hedge with the same pair of shears, moving from a blight-infected section at one end to clean growth at the other, spreading the infection as they went. The correct approach: cut out the affected section first, sterilise the blades completely, then move to the rest. Bag and bin all clippings and fallen leaves. They should not go in a council green-waste bin or a compost heap because the spores survive both.

Honey fungus and box blight can look similar in early stages. The key difference is where the damage originates: blight attacks from the outside and top, working inward; honey fungus attacks from the roots, working upward.
Honey fungus: the worst-case scenario on a CT14 coastal garden.
Honey fungus (Armillaria) is the most destructive disease I come across on Deal and Walmer hedges, and it is the one where acting fast makes the clearest difference to how far the problem spreads along a boundary row. The fungus colonises the roots of dead or dying woody material and spreads outward through the soil via black, bootlace-like strands called rhizomorphs, which can travel several metres in a season. Once those rhizomorphs reach the roots of healthy plants in the same hedge, those plants are at serious risk.
The autumn toadstool flush is usually when people first notice something is wrong. Honey-coloured toadstools clustered at the base of a privet or laurel hedge in October are almost always Armillaria. By the time the toadstools appear, the infection has typically been advancing for one or two seasons. The visible dieback in the following spring can feel sudden, but the root damage is not new.
There is no chemical treatment that works against established honey fungus. The standard advice, confirmed by the RHS, is to remove all infected plants and their root systems completely, including any old stumps from previous felling elsewhere in the garden (stumps are a common starting point for infection on CT14 plots that have had trees removed over the years). On the heavier, slower-draining ground on the inland side of Deal toward Sholden and Mill Hill, improving drainage before replanting is also worth doing: a drier root zone slows the speed at which the fungus spreads, even if it does not stop it.
Species that show genuine resistance or tolerance and that I would consider for replanting a section lost to honey fungus include yew (Taxus baccata), which is notably resistant, and tamarisk, which performs well on exposed seafront plots along the CT14 shore and appears tolerant. Box (Buxus) is also listed as resistant by the RHS, which is an irony given its vulnerability to blight and moth caterpillar.
Box tree moth: a growing problem in south-east Kent.
The box tree moth (Cydalima perspectalis) arrived in the UK around 2011 and has spread steadily across south-east England. By 2024 it was well-established across Kent, and I have had reports from gardens in Deal and Walmer of the characteristic webbing and skeletonised leaves that indicate a heavy infestation. It does not affect any species other than Buxus, so if your hedge is privet, laurel or griselinia, this is not your problem.
The caterpillars hide inside the hedge rather than on the outer surface, which is why the damage often looks worse than expected when you part the growth. The interior can be completely stripped while the outer skin looks superficially intact. I check the interior first on any box hedge job now, particularly in late spring when the first generation is active.
Pheromone traps are useful for monitoring rather than control: they tell you which generation is flying so you can time treatment more accurately. Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) sprays are effective against the caterpillars and are approved for garden use in the UK. The critical timing is to treat before the caterpillars are large. Once the third-generation caterpillars have finished feeding in a warm autumn, they overwinter inside the hedge and the cycle begins again in March.
Phytophthora and the wet-winter problem.
Phytophthora root rot has been a more frequent presence in Kent gardens since the run of wet winters from 2022 onwards. It is a water mould rather than a true fungus, and it spreads in waterlogged or poorly-drained soil. Cherry laurel, in particular, can show sudden collapse even after years of healthy growth: the leaves turn yellow, then brown, and the whole plant dies over a few weeks. Scraping the bark at soil level reveals a dark, water-soaked lesion at the root crown.
On the heavier, slower-draining ground on the inland side of Deal, towards Sholden and Upper Deal, phytophthora is more prevalent than it is on the sandy or shingle-based seafront plots, where water moves through the soil more freely. A laurel or leylandii hedge on heavy ground that has shown progressive dieback since a wet winter is a candidate for phytophthora, alongside honey fungus.
The two diseases are distinguishable. Honey fungus produces white mycelium with a mushroom scent under the bark at ground level and the black bootlace rhizomorphs in adjacent soil. Phytophthora produces a dark, water-soaked lesion at the root crown with no white mycelium and no rhizomorphs. If you cannot tell from the signs on site, the RHS plant health advisory service accepts samples for diagnosis, which is worth doing before you start removing plants.
Nesting season: check before removing any hedge material
Any work that involves cutting back or removing hedge material can disturb an active wild bird's nest. UK Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, section 1 makes it an offence to intentionally take, damage or destroy an active wild bird's nest. Nesting season runs 1 March to 31 August. The fine is up to £5,000 per nest, and the offence carries up to six months in prison.
The safe window for any significant cutting or removal work is September to the end of February. If diseased material needs removing in the March–August window, a careful walk of the full hedge line to check for active nests is required before any work begins. Any section with an active nest must be left untouched until the brood has fledged.
For the Kingsdown cliff-edge hedges backing onto the SSSI, nesting pressure is higher than in town gardens, with stonechats, whitethroats and linnets using the scrub corridor. See the nesting-season guide for Kingsdown-specific timing.
Privet aphids and leaf spot: damage to manage, not to panic about.
Privet is the commonest hedge species in Deal and Walmer by a considerable margin. Most properties in the older terraced streets of the town have at least some privet, and a healthy privet hedge in the right conditions is close to bulletproof. But it is not without problems.
Aphid infestations on privet are primarily cosmetic. The tightly curled leaves and sticky honeydew are easy to misread as a disease, but the plant recovers once the aphid population crashes, which usually happens when natural predators arrive later in the summer. The most practical response for a domestic garden is a strong jet of water to dislodge the colonies, then leaving the hedge alone while lacewings and ladybird larvae take over. Insecticidal soap is an option if you want a quicker result, but the timing matters: spray when the population is active and the caterpillars are small, not after it has already crashed on its own.
Leaf spot has been more visible in Kent since the wet summers of 2023 and 2024. The dark spots and yellowing can look alarming on a laurel or privet hedge in July, but the cause is nearly always manageable with straightforward steps. Good airflow is the main preventive: a hedge clipped to let light and air through the outer face, rather than left to become a solid wall of growth, is measurably less prone to fungal leaf spot. Removing fallen spotted leaves promptly, rather than leaving them to splash spores back up onto the hedge from the ground, is the other key step.
