The first two years make or break a new hedge. Here is what the aftercare actually looks like on the CT14 coast.

Most hedge failures happen not at planting but in the twelve months that follow. Watering, mulching and feeding requirements vary considerably by species, and the free-draining shingle-over-alluvium ground across Deal, Walmer and Kingsdown makes the stakes higher than they would be on heavier inland soils.

When I plant a hedge in Deal or Walmer I always leave the client with the same summary: the planting day is straightforward, but the first summer is the critical period. A griselinia on a Walmer seafront plot that goes unwatered for a fortnight in July will not necessarily die overnight, but the root system will not knit into the surrounding ground properly, and the hedge will sit three years behind where it should be. A hawthorn bare-root whip planted in November needs almost no attention through winter, but it still needs a decent mulch layer to carry it through its first dry May.

The difference in aftercare demand between species is large enough that a single generic recommendation misses the point. The table below puts eight of the most common CT14 hedge species side by side on the five factors that determine whether a new hedge establishes well or limps along. The sections that follow expand on each factor in practice.

Before you start: safety notes for aftercare work near a new hedge

  • Ground disturbance around stem bases. When applying or topping up mulch, keep the material at least 5 cm clear of plant stems. Mulch piled against bark traps moisture and encourages collar rot, which can kill a young plant within a season.
  • Granular feed near roots. Keep fertiliser granules away from direct root contact: apply in a band 10–15 cm out from the stem bases, not touching the planting hole. Water in thoroughly after applying.
  • Thorny species. Hawthorn and blackthorn whips have sharp thorns even when young. Wear heavy leather gloves for any work close to bare-root plantings in their first season, when the stem shape is still irregular and unpredictable.
  • Hosepipe and hose-gun pressure. High-pressure watering can displace lightweight soil around recently planted whips and expose fine roots. Use a watering can with a rose or a low-flow hosepipe setting for the first six weeks.
  • Windrock on exposed CT14 sites. After gales check every staked plant: a rocking stem loosens the root-to-soil contact that is essential for first-year establishment. Press the soil back down around the root collar with your foot if the plant has moved.

Nesting season and ground disturbance near established hedges (WCA 1981, section 1)

The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, section 1, makes it an offence to intentionally take, damage or destroy an active wild bird's nest. Nesting season runs 1 March to 31 August. Aftercare work including mulch application, weeding and feeding around an existing hedge base carries a real risk of disturbing ground-nesting species through this window. Fine: up to £5,000 per nest, up to six months in prison. For any ground disturbance within two metres of an established hedge line between March and August, walk the base first and check for nests at ground level. Safe window: September to end February. New bare plantings made in previously clear open ground do not carry the same risk, but replanting work that involves removing turf or old root material close to an existing hedge does. If in doubt, pause and seek qualified ecological advice.

Why CT14 ground makes aftercare harder than a generic guide suggests.

Most UK hedge aftercare advice is written for the national average: moderate clay loam, moderate rainfall, a sheltered garden somewhere in middle England. Deal and Walmer are not that. The coastal strip runs on shingle over alluvium: fast-draining ground that loses moisture quickly in dry weather and can waterlog temporarily in a wet winter before draining again. Mill Hill and the upper edges of Sholden and Upper Deal have heavier loam over chalk, which holds moisture better. Kingsdown sits on thin soil over chalk, with very little reservoir below the surface.

The fast drainage is the bigger problem for a new hedge. A privet bare-root planted in November will carry through the first winter with little attention; the dormant root system needs minimal water. But come April, when that same privet is breaking into growth and the CT14 coast can go three weeks without meaningful rainfall, the root ball has nothing to draw on unless the mulch has preserved what the winter rain put in. On heavier inland soils the hedge would still be drawing from subsoil moisture. On shingle and alluvium, once the top layer dries out, it dries fast and completely.

The salt wind is the second factor. An exposed first-line seafront plot in Walmer, on the Downs Roads or along the seafront north of the pier, is a genuinely harsh environment for a plant in its first season. Griselinia handles the salt well once its roots are down, but in the first summer it has the same vulnerability as any young container plant: a large leaf canopy evaporating moisture faster than an immature root system can supply it. That combination of exposed position, salt-laden air and fast-draining ground is why I recommend 10 cm of mulch for griselinia on CT14 rather than the 5–7 cm that is standard elsewhere.

Watering: the rules that actually matter.

The most common aftercare mistake I see is watering little and often: a quick pass with the hose every morning that wets the top 3 cm of the mulch without penetrating to the root zone. This trains young roots to stay shallow. Better to water deeply and less frequently: a slow, deliberate soak that wets the ground to 20–25 cm depth, then leave it for two or three days before the next pass. The root system then chases moisture downward, which is exactly where it needs to go to anchor the plant and access deeper reserves.

For pot-grown griselinia or cherry laurel planted in spring on a CT14 seafront site, I work to this schedule during the first summer: daily watering for the first three weeks, then every two days until the end of August, reducing to weekly through September. I use a low-flow hosepipe setting or a watering can, not a high-pressure gun, for the first six weeks. The root ball from a container plant is a different density from the surrounding ground; a jet of water can blast soil away from the interface between the two, leaving an air gap that defeats the purpose of watering.

Bare-root plantings from the winter are at a different point in their cycle. Planted dormant in November or January, they need almost nothing through their first winter: the ground is cold, the plant has no leaves, and rainfall is usually adequate. The danger moment is March to April, when the plant breaks bud and suddenly has a leaf canopy to support. Check bare-root plantings weekly from late March, and begin a weekly watering schedule if there has been no meaningful rainfall in ten days.

Mulching: the single most cost-effective aftercare step.

I put a mulch layer on every new hedge I plant, and I would rather the client skip the feeding than skip the mulch. On CT14's free-draining ground, mulch is not optional: it is the mechanism that makes watering possible without daily attention. A 10 cm layer of composted bark or woodchip over a thoroughly watered root zone will hold useful moisture for a week in dry weather, and will suppress the couch grass that is vigorous on Deal's coastal soils and would otherwise compete hard with new whips in their first season.

The mulch should run the full length of the hedge line, not just around individual plant bases. A single band 60–80 cm wide centred on the plant row, applied before the first dry spell of the year, is significantly more effective than spot mulching around each stem. Keep the material 5 cm clear of every stem: contact between organic mulch and bark creates conditions for collar rot, which can kill a young plant quietly, from the ground up, before the damage is visible at canopy height.

Material choice matters less than depth. Composted woodchip from a local tree surgeon, composted bark from a garden centre, or well-rotted garden compost all work. Fresh green woodchip is sometimes free from tree surgeons doing site clearance in the CT14 area, but needs a six-to-twelve month composting period before it goes directly against plant roots: raw green chip locks up nitrogen as it decomposes, which competes with the plants for the same nutrient. If free chip is available, stack it for a season and use last year's pile on this year's plantings.

Feeding: less is more in year one.

Young hedge plants do not need heavy feeding. The goal in year one is root establishment, not canopy bulk, and a high-nitrogen fertiliser can push fast, soft top growth at the expense of the root system. I work to a simple rule: one application of a balanced granular fertiliser (Growmore or equivalent, roughly equal parts nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium) in April, after the plant has started into growth but before the main growing flush. Nothing more until the following April.

The exceptions are conifers and escallonia. Leylandii and thuja respond badly to high-nitrogen general fertilisers: they put on rapid weak growth that is more vulnerable to salt damage and to the brief but sharp frosts that CT14 can get in February. Use a specialist conifer feed at the label rate, not a general NPK. Escallonia on an exposed seafront site is similarly better served by a light hand: too much nitrogen in the first summer promotes soft new growth that is the first thing damaged by a salt-laden south-westerly in autumn.

Do not feed after August. Late-season feeding prolongs growth into autumn, and growth that has not hardened off before the first frosts is vulnerable. September, October and November are mulch-top-up months, not feeding months.
