Hedge height and width reduction in Deal and Walmer: how much to cut back safely, and when.

The question I get asked more than almost any other is some version of this: "The hedge has got out of hand, I want it down by about a metre, will it survive?" The honest answer is: it depends almost entirely on the species. Privet and yew can handle a hard cut back and will regrow from old wood. Leylandii cannot, and cutting into the brown zone is permanent. This guide compares the nine species I see most in Deal, Walmer and Kingsdown gardens and gives you honest limits for each.

Hedge renovation and hedge height reduction are different jobs. Renovation, covered in the renovation guide, is what you do with a hedge that has been left for ten or more years and has lost its shape entirely. Reduction is what most people actually need: a hedge that has been maintained but is now half a metre too tall or has spread out into the garden more than you want. The aim is to bring it back to a manageable dimension in one season, or at most two, without setting off a multi-year recovery project.

Before you start: safety notes for height reduction work

  • Eye and ear protection. Cutting higher sections of a tall hedge with powered tools puts debris at face height. Safety glasses and ear defenders are not optional for petrol or mains trimmer work above shoulder height.
  • Gloves. Holly and hawthorn carry serious spines. Even laurel stems leave cuts if you are clearing the arisings by hand without gloves.
  • Ladder caution. Do not use a stepladder on sloped ground, and do not combine a ladder with a powered trimmer. For hedges above 1.8m, a long-reach pole trimmer from the ground or a contracted crew with proper access equipment is safer than DIY from a ladder. The trimmer types guide covers long-reach options.
  • RCD protection. If you are using a mains electric trimmer, always work with an RCD adaptor. A cord cut by the machine on a wet autumn day is a serious hazard.
  • Wasp nests. Before starting on any section, walk the hedge line slowly and look into the interior. September hedges in particular often house late-summer nests that the colony is still defending actively. A stick tapped gently into the hedge base will reveal activity before you commit a trimmer to the same spot.

Species comparison: how much can you safely remove in one season?

The table below gives realistic limits for height and width reduction in a single season, with notes on timing and how quickly each species recovers. "Safe" means you can expect full regrowth to cover the cut surfaces within one to two growing seasons. "Staged" means you should split the reduction across two years to avoid stressing the plant or leaving permanent bare patches.

Reduce in July or August when the plant has the full growing season ahead to heal. Avoid using a trimmer on large-leaved laurel for the main face cut: secateurs or loppers give a cleaner result on the larger stems.

Still handles meaningful reduction well. More salt-tolerant than cherry laurel on an exposed coastal plot, which is why it appears more often in seafront gardens between Deal and Kingsdown. Stage the reduction across two years if you need to take more than 40% off the height.
Griselinia (Griselinia littoralis) Up to 30%, staged approach recommended for more Up to 25% on each side per season Yes, from established stems, but slowly July–August 18–24 months The default CT14 coastal screen: it is on almost every Walmer seafront plot and throughout Upper Deal. Griselinia tolerates moderate reduction but does not bounce back from a hard cut as quickly as privet or laurel. If you need to bring a large griselinia down by 30% or more, do it in stages: height one year, width the next, and allow a full growing season between. Hard autumn or winter cuts leave the interior bare longer on this coast where the salt wind dries out exposed stems. Yew (Taxus baccata) Up to 50%, or more in staged renovation Up to 50% on each side Yes: one of the few conifers that does August–September 12–18 months Yew is unusual among conifers in that it regrows from old wood readily, which gives you real flexibility with reduction. An old yew hedge in a Walmer walled garden can be cut back hard in August and will push new growth from bare stems within one growing season. Do not cut yew in spring when growth is just starting: the plant's energy is already committed to the new shoot tips and a hard cut at that moment is more stressful than one in late summer. Allow the new growth to extend and thicken for a full season before trimming it tight again.
Leylandii (x Cuprocyparis leylandii) Up to 30% of overall height, staying in green growth only Up to 20% on each side, staying in green growth only No. Brown wood stays brown permanently. September (one cut per year) N/A if cut into brown: permanent bare patch The critical rule with leylandii: never cut back into the brown interior zone. Once leylandii loses its green outer layer, the bare wood will not regenerate. A leylandii that has been allowed to grow to 5m and that you now want at 3.5m is not a reducible hedge in the usual sense. The outer green layer is only 40–60cm deep on an established plant, so the realistic reduction is limited to that zone. If a leylandii hedge has genuinely outgrown its plot and the brown zone is too close to the surface, replacement is often the only honest option. Beech (Fagus sylvatica) Up to 50% Up to 40% on each side Yes, from established stems August (preferred) or late winter 12–18 months Beech handles hard reduction well and pushes strong regrowth from old wood. Less common on exposed CT14 plots (hornbeam is more reliable on the coastal alluvium), but where a beech hedge exists in a sheltered Upper Deal or Mill Hill garden it can be reduced meaningfully in a single cut. Time it for August: the plant has had a full growing season but still has six to eight weeks of growth to cover the cut surfaces before the first frosts.
Escallonia (Escallonia spp.) Up to 30–40% after the summer flowering Up to 30% on each side Yes, from established wood Late August to early September (after flowering finishes) 12–18 months Escallonia is the informal flowering hedge of the Walmer seafront, and it does accept reduction, but the timing matters. Cut it before the summer flowering and you lose the season's flowers. Cut it too late in autumn and the open wounds go into winter without sealing. The window is late August to mid-September on a coastal CT14 plot. If you need to take more than a third off the height, spread it across two seasons to keep some foliage cover through the recovery period.
Holly (Ilex aquifolium) Up to 50% Up to 40% on each side Yes, well July–August 12–24 months Holly is slower-growing than privet or laurel but handles hard cuts surprisingly well once established. An old holly hedge in a Middle Street or Beach Street walled garden can be taken back hard without lasting damage. Use secateurs or loppers rather than a trimmer on holly: the trimmer shreds the large, glossy leaves and the result looks rough until the new growth covers the damage. The recovery is slower than privet, so plan for a full 18–24 months before the hedge looks fully closed again after a major reduction.

Timing: when each species should be reduced.

The single most common mistake I see is reduction done at the wrong time of year, which either causes avoidable stress or turns a manageable job into a multi-season recovery. The table below shows the safe window for each species, with notes on what happens outside it.

Nesting season: a reduction job in the March–August window needs a survey walk first

UK Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, section 1 makes it an offence to intentionally take, damage or destroy an active wild bird's nest. Nesting season runs 1 March to 31 August. The maximum penalty is a £5,000 fine per nest and up to six months in prison.

A hedge being reduced rather than just trimmed is a higher-risk operation than a routine face cut: you are removing more interior volume, which is exactly where nests are built. Before any reduction work between 1 March and 31 August, walk the full hedge line slowly and look carefully into the interior at multiple heights before picking up any tool. On the Kingsdown cliff hedges close to the SSSI corridor, and on the denser laurel and privet hedges behind the Deal seafront, nesting density can be high. If you find an active nest, stop. The work can resume once the nest is empty and the chicks have fledged, which is typically four to six weeks.

Griselinia on the Walmer seafront: staged is the right approach.

Griselinia is everywhere on the CT14 coast. It is the default screening hedge from the Walmer seafront right through to the sheltered back lanes of Upper Deal, and there is a reason for that: it is the most salt-tolerant large-leaved evergreen that will actually thrive at 50m from the shore without salt scorch pulling it back every winter. But its salt tolerance comes with a slower growth rate, and that slow growth makes a big difference to how you handle a reduction.

When I get asked to bring a large griselinia back by 30% or more, I nearly always recommend staging it. Take the height down in year one, allow a full growing season for the plant to push new lateral growth from the cut stems, then reduce the width in year two. On a Walmer seafront plot this matters more than it does inland: the exposed position means the plant cannot afford to lose too much of its protective foliage in one pass. A griselinia stripped of both height and width simultaneously on a seafront plot will drop leaves from the exposed interior before the new growth covers the gaps, and the coastal salt wind gets into a weakened plant faster than an inland species would experience.

Hopes Grove Nurseries, the UK's largest specialist hedging grower, have published guidance and video content on griselinia management via their YouTube channel. Their overview of the species confirms that griselinia is best treated as a plant that rewards patience at reduction time rather than one you can take back in a single hard cut. Specifically for CT14 conditions, I would add that July is the safest month for the initial reduction: the plant has had a full spring growth flush, the cuts callus quickly in the warm weather, and there is still enough growing season left before autumn to put on meaningful protective new wood before the first coastal gales arrive in October.

The leylandii problem: when reduction is not the right answer.

Leylandii is the one species where I have to give people news they do not always want to hear. Unlike every other species in the table above, leylandii does not regenerate from old wood. The brown zone inside an established leylandii hedge is permanent: cut into it and it stays bare. This is not a temporary setback or a recovery-time question; it is a biological limit of the species.

On a typical established leylandii hedge that has been trimmed regularly, the green outer zone is 40–60cm deep. That is the only zone where reduction is possible. If the hedge is currently 4.5m and you want it at 2.5m, you need to ask whether the green zone extends 2m below the current top. On most established leylandii hedges it does not. The brown interior is already too close to the target height.

In those cases, the realistic options are: leave it at a height where you can keep it in the green zone, replace it with a species that allows hard reduction (privet at the fast end, thuja for a more similar look with better renovation options), or contract the job to a specialist who can give you an honest assessment in person. Conservation areas: check before you act.

Most routine hedge height or width reduction in Deal's seven conservation areas is exempt from the section-211 notice requirement. The notice applies to individual trees over 75mm diameter at 1.5m height, not to hedging species doing their hedge job. Reducing a privet, laurel, griselinia or escallonia hedge in the Middle Street or Upper Walmer conservation area does not need a notice.

The exception comes up when a hedge line has large individual trees grown up within it: a holly or yew standard that has exceeded the 75mm threshold at 1.5m is no longer just a hedging plant in the legal sense, and removing or reducing it needs a section-211 notice filed with Dover District Council six weeks in advance. DIY or contractor for a large reduction?

For hedges up to about 1.5m tall and a species in the "forgiving" category (privet, cherry laurel), a confident DIY approach with a good petrol or battery trimmer and the right timing is perfectly reasonable. The main risks are timing errors (cutting a flowering hedge at the wrong point in the season) and ladder safety (do not combine a stepladder with a petrol trimmer on a CT14 coastal plot where the ground is often slightly soft and uneven).

For hedges above 1.8m, for leylandii (where the green-zone limit needs an in-person assessment), for conservation-area jobs with oversize standards, or for any griselinia or laurel hedge where the reduction is more than a third of the current height: I would recommend getting a contractor in, or at least getting a professional assessment before you start. An hour's advice on what the plant will and will not tolerate costs less than replacing a hedge that did not recover from a cut it could not handle.
