Nine hedging species for Deal and Walmer, ranked for the wildlife they support. And why griselinia scores worst.
The hedge on the boundary of a Deal terrace garden or a Walmer seafront plot does more than mark a line on the ground. Managed well, it feeds birds through the winter, shelters insects through the spring, and provides nesting cover for everything from blackbirds to wrens. Managed badly, or planted with the wrong species, it does almost none of those things. Here is my working comparison of what grows in CT14 gardens and how much each species actually gives back.
The Kingsdown-to-Dover-Cliffs coastline sits inside an SSSI whose designating features include chalk grassland flora and nesting seabirds. The hedgerows along the cliff-top lanes in Kingsdown connect that SSSI edge to the inland gardens of Deal and Walmer, and they serve as movement corridors for small mammals, overwintering insects and nesting passerines travelling between the Downs and the coast. The hedge at the bottom of your garden on Victoria Road or at the top of Kingsdown's cliff-top path is not isolated: it is part of a network.
That context changes the species choice question. It is not just about what looks good or what survives the salt wind off the Downs Roads (covered in the salt-tolerant species guide). It is about what genuinely feeds and shelters the birds, bees and small mammals that move along that coastal corridor. The table below puts nine commonly planted CT14 species side by side against those criteria.

Before you cut: safety notes for hedge management involving wildlife assessment
- Walk the hedge line first. Before any cut, walk slowly along the full length of the hedge, listening for alarm calls and looking for nest entry points at the base and mid-canopy. In a mixed native hedge, a blackbird may be sitting tight and completely invisible until you are within arm's reach.
- Eye protection. Hawthorn and blackthorn thorns can reach 25 mm. Safety glasses are non-negotiable: not sunglasses, not reading glasses. A dedicated visor for any petrol or battery trimmer work.
- Ear defenders. Petrol hedge trimmers on a mature hawthorn hedge can exceed 100 dB. Battery tools are considerably quieter but still worth covering on sessions longer than 30 minutes.
- Gloves. Heavy-duty thorn-proof gloves for any work on hawthorn, blackthorn or holly. Ordinary garden gloves will not stop a hawthorn spine going through to skin.
- Wasp nests. Mixed native hedges with dense internal structure are prime wasp-nesting sites from May through September. Check the interior of the hedge carefully at ground level and at mid-canopy before starting any cutting work.
- RCD adaptor. Any corded electric trimmer should run through a residual current device, particularly in the narrow garden strips typical of Deal and Walmer terrace gardens where extension cables cross hard paving.
Nesting season: the legal position
The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, section 1 makes it an offence to intentionally take, damage or destroy an active wild bird's nest. Nesting season runs 1 March to 31 August. Fines can reach £5,000 per nest, with up to six months' imprisonment. The safe cutting window is September through to the end of February. For any job within the March–August window, a careful survey-first walk of the full hedge line is required before any cutting starts. What the table means in practice for a Deal or Walmer garden.
The single most useful change most CT14 garden owners could make is replacing a griselinia monoculture with a mixed hawthorn and blackthorn hedge on any plot not directly facing the sea. Griselinia is often chosen because it grows fast and looks tidy. It does both of those things. It just does almost nothing else. A hawthorn hedge of the same height, managed on the same timescale, will have supported hundreds of insect-hours and dozens of nesting attempts by the time the griselinia has grown to a matching metre and a half.
On exposed seafront plots in Walmer and Kingsdown, full hawthorn is not always viable in the first few years. The salt-wind exposure that makes griselinia appealing is real. In those cases, I often recommend a layered approach: tamarisk or griselinia as the outer wind-screen facing the shore, and hawthorn, blackthorn or escallonia planted behind it in the shelter created. The outer layer takes the weather. The inner layer does the wildlife work. Over five or ten years as both layers mature, the inner hedge becomes genuinely productive and the outer screen can be managed less formally.
The second change, applicable to the many existing privet hedges in central Deal and Walmer, requires no replanting at all: leave the flower spikes. Privet in flower in June and July is a significant local pollinator resource. Most privet hedges in Middle Street, Victoria Road and the surrounding terraces are cut before the flowers fully open or cut so frequently during summer that flowering never happens. Cutting privet twice a year, with the timing shifted so the first cut happens in late August rather than June, allows a full flowering cycle and then a clean cut before October. The difference in hoverfly and bee activity on a flowering privet hedge compared to a recently-clipped one is immediately visible.
Hawthorn: the one species that does almost everything.
I have planted more hawthorn in Deal and Walmer gardens than any other native species, and I have never regretted a metre of it. The blossom in May is one of the most significant early-season nectar sources in the UK, arriving when overwintered bumblebee queens are establishing new colonies and solitary bees are foraging for nest provisions. The haw crop in autumn is heavy, persistent and eaten enthusiastically by every thrush species that overwinters on the Kent coast, including the fieldfares and redwings that move down from Scandinavia to the CT14 coast from October onward.
For nesting, the thorny internal structure of a well-established hawthorn hedge is exceptionally difficult for predators to navigate. Blackbirds, dunnocks, song thrushes and chiffchaffs all nest regularly in the hawthorn hedges along the back lanes of Upper Deal, Sholden and Mill Hill. In a good year a three-metre stretch of mature hawthorn hedge will support two or three nesting attempts, each producing four to five young.
Hawthorn is also forgiving to manage. It takes hard renovation cuts, comes back strongly, and can be kept at one metre or allowed to grow to four without losing its wildlife function, though the wildlife value increases substantially with height and density. The one constraint is the nesting season: a hawthorn hedge should not be touched between 1 March and 31 August without a careful survey, and for most Deal and Walmer garden hedges in good condition, September through to February is the only window I will work in.
Blackthorn: early blossom, impenetrable nesting cover.
Blackthorn flowers in March before the leaves appear, which makes it the single most important early-season nectar source in a native hedge on the CT14 coast. The white blossom appears while hawthorn is still bare, and it arrives at exactly the moment bumblebee queens are at their most vulnerable, having just emerged from winter dormancy with depleted fat reserves. A blackthorn section in a mixed hedge can make the difference between a queen establishing a colony and failing in cold March weather.
The sloe crop in September provides food during the critical period before the main berry season properly arrives. Fieldfares and redwings take sloes immediately on arrival in October. The crop is often heavy enough to carry well into November, overlapping with the start of the hawthorn haw season.
One practical note for Kingsdown: blackthorn spreads by root suckers and will colonise ground that is left uncut around it. On cliff-top plots adjacent to the SSSI, that is not necessarily a problem, but in a defined garden boundary it means managing the sucker growth annually. I usually cut suckers back in autumn rather than digging them out, which keeps the energy in the established plants rather than redirecting it into new sucker growth.
Holly: the slow-burn asset in a wildlife hedge.
Holly is slow to establish, which is why most people do not plant it as a primary hedge species. But a holly section within a mixed native hedge is an asset that compounds over decades. The berries on female plants persist from November through to February and provide food when the hawthorn haw crop is exhausted and before the blackthorn sloe season of the following autumn. Mistle thrushes in particular will defend a berry-laden holly from other birds with considerable aggression: a regular sight on the holly hedges along the lanes around Walmer Castle.
The evergreen structure also provides year-round roosting and hibernation shelter at the base. Hedgehogs, one of the species that benefits most from established native hedgerows, use the dense leaf litter beneath an old holly hedge for both hibernation and feeding. The CT14 coast has a recovering hedgehog population following surveys by Kent Wildlife Trust: holly within a mixed hedge contributes to both shelter and the insect-rich leaf litter that hedgehogs feed in.
One important species note: holly is dioecious, meaning male and female flowers are on separate plants. Berries are only produced by female plants, but pollination requires a male plant within bee-flying distance (generally within half a mile, though a male plant in the same hedge is more reliable). If you are adding holly to an existing hedge, specify female plants, and check whether there is already a male plant somewhere in the vicinity. Many old Walmer and Upper Deal hedges contain both, having been established from mixed seed rather than propagated cuttings.
The seafront dilemma: escallonia versus griselinia.
On directly exposed seafront plots in Walmer and Kingsdown, the conversation about wildlife-friendly hedging always comes back to the same two species. Griselinia is what most clients want. Escallonia is what I recommend when wildlife value is part of the brief.
Both species survive full coastal salt exposure. Griselinia grows faster and is denser in youth. But escallonia flowers from June through August, and those tubular flowers are significant for bumblebees, particularly long-tongued species that cannot exploit the shallower flowers of hawthorn blossom. A mature escallonia hedge on a south-facing Walmer seafront wall is alive with bumblebees in July in a way that an equivalent griselinia hedge never is.
The compromise I offer to clients who want the height and density of griselinia but are open to some wildlife value: plant griselinia as the outer screen for the first three years, then add an escallonia layer inside it as the site becomes more sheltered. By year five or six, the escallonia is carrying the wildlife load while the griselinia handles the wind. The additional cost of the second planting is modest against the lifetime of the hedge.
Management timing: how the cut affects the berry crop.
The nesting-season legal window (September through to end of February) coincides reasonably well with the management window needed for maximum berry and fruit production. The main tension is between cutting in early autumn, which tidies the hedge quickly, and cutting in late winter, which allows the berry crop to be fully consumed by overwintering birds before the cut removes any ungathered fruit. The table below sets out the timing trade-offs species by species.

A note on mixed hedges: why one species is rarely the answer.
The most wildlife-productive hedges I manage along the CT14 coast are almost all mixed-species plantings, usually a base of hawthorn with blackthorn, holly, dog rose and sometimes field maple woven through at planting. A single-species hedge, whether it is a monoculture privet or a monoculture griselinia, peaks in one or two of the criteria in the table above and performs poorly in the rest. A mixed hedge of five species spreads the flowering and fruiting season across the whole year, from blackthorn blossom in March to holly berries in February, with something of value in every month.
The practical objection to mixed hedges is that they look less formal and are harder to keep at a uniform height and width. That is true. On a Middle Street conservation-area terrace with a 90-centimetre garden strip, a tightly-clipped mixed hedge is more demanding than a uniform privet. On a larger Walmer or Kingsdown plot, a mixed hedge of 2–3 metres clipped once a year in January requires less total effort than a privet hedge cut three times a year into a formal shape, and it does considerably more work ecologically.
John Horsey, a UK horticulturist and wildlife surveyor who works with Natural England and Forestry England, has made the case clearly in his online tutorials (see the Create an Amazing Wildlife Friendly Hedge in Your Garden video on the John Horsey Horticulture YouTube channel) that mixed native hedging produces measurably more wildlife activity per metre than any monoculture, including native monocultures. His advice on species selection and cutting frequency aligns closely with what I observe on CT14 jobs: the hawthorn and blackthorn combination consistently outperforms any alternative in the UK maritime climate.
The Kingsdown SSSI corridor and why it matters for your hedge.
The stretch of coastline running from Kingsdown south to Dover Cliffs is designated as an SSSI for its chalk grassland and coastal heath flora, its nesting seabird populations and its invertebrate assemblage. The hedgerows immediately inland from the SSSI boundary, including the gardens of Kingsdown village and the cliff-top lanes, function as buffer habitat and movement corridors. Species that breed in the SSSI (linnets, stonechats, yellowhammers on the cliff edges) forage into those inland hedgerows during the breeding season.
That means the choice of hedging species in a Kingsdown garden has a slightly different weight than the same choice in a central Deal terrace. A well-planted native mixed hedge in Kingsdown contributes directly to the quality of the habitat network surrounding the SSSI. A griselinia monoculture is, in those terms, a missed opportunity rather than just a neutral choice.
Kent Wildlife Trust's Wild Your Garden programme, active in the Deal and Walmer area, offers planting advice and occasionally subsidised native hedging plants for exactly this reason. For any work near the SSSI boundary or involving established hedgerows of any age on cliff-top plots, I check the Natural England Magic layer before quoting. Ancient hedgerows carry additional protections under the Hedgerow Regulations 1997, and a hedgerow with species counts meeting the regulations' biodiversity criteria cannot be removed without a successful Hedgerow Removal Notice to the local planning authority. It is a less-known rule than the section-211 conservation-area notice, but it applies to a number of the old boundary hedges on the Kingsdown approach.
