Crown raising: clearance for the drive, the path, the view.

When raising is the right call

• Clearance: the standard target heights are 2.4m for pedestrian pavements, 4.5m for driveways or lawns you cross with a mower, 5.2m over the road. On Middle Street, the sub-metre front gardens rarely need it; on Walmer villa drives, it's the standard annual-cycle job.
• Sightlines to the Channel: Deal seafront, Kingsdown clifftop and the front-line Walmer villas often want the lower canopy raised to open the sea view without felling the tree. Done well, this preserves the tree's shape completely.
• Light into the garden below: sometimes better achieved by a thin than a raise; I'll say which the site needs after seeing it.
• House and roofline pressure: a mature sycamore or lime leaning against the eaves is a raise-plus-reduction job; not a raise on its own.

Species notes for Deal

• Salt-tolerant hedging used as small trees: Tamarix, Olearia traversii, Escallonia often need lower-branch clearance under garden gates and paths. Straightforward; small-scale.
• Holm oak (Quercus ilex): the Walmer Castle front-line evergreen. Very responsive to a clean raise; late summer only.
• Lime: throws water-sprouts (epicormic growth) after any raise. Standard return visit at 12-18 months to clean those up.
• Ash: assess for ash-dieback before any climbing work. Brittle wood from advanced dieback flips the job to a fell.
• Beech and hornbeam: inland-only, on Mill Hill and Sholden. Late summer raising, never spring.

Middle Street and the Deal-Walmer CAs

Any tree with a stem 75mm or over at 1.5m in one of the seven Deal-Walmer conservation areas: Middle Street (Kent's first CA, 1968), Upper Deal (2019 appraisal), South Barracks (1997), Nelson Street (2017), Upper Walmer (1977) and Kingsdown (1970, extended 1994 and 2016), needs six weeks' section-211 notice to Dover District Council before work. TPO trees need a full 8-week application. I file both.

How much of the canopy you can raise

The BS 3998 guidance is not to raise more than the lowest third of the tree's total height in one visit. Beyond that you're changing the crown-to-trunk ratio too fast and stressing the tree. If the target clearance needs more, we stage the work over 12 to 18 months.
