Tree services · Crown reduction
Crown reduction reduces the overall height or spread of a tree by cutting branches back to laterals of a sensible size, ideally at least one-third the diameter of the branch being removed. The tree's future shape is preserved. Its recovery capacity is preserved. Topping, cutting main leaders back to stubs, does none of this, and I don't do it.
Topping (also called "hat-racking") cuts main stems back to a stub. It looks like reduction, briefly. Then the tree throws violent regrowth, dozens of weakly-attached water-sprouts, and decay enters at every open cut, and within 3 to 5 years the tree is more dangerous than it was before. Reduction, by contrast, always cuts back to a lateral limb capable of taking over as the new leader. The tree keeps its shape, keeps its structure, and keeps its life expectancy.
If the tree is genuinely too big for the site and reduction alone can't fix it, the honest answer is a staged reduction over several visits, or removal and replacement with a species that fits. Not topping.
BS 3998 guidance: no more than 30% of the live crown in a single visit. Beyond that you're stressing the tree past its recovery capacity. If the target reduction is bigger, we stage it: typically 20% now, 20% in 18-24 months. Deal's coastal exposure means I usually stage on the low end of that; over-cutting an already wind-stressed tree is asking for canker and dieback.
Any tree with a stem 75mm or over at 1.5m in one of the seven Deal-Walmer CAs: Middle Street (Kent's first CA, 1968), Upper Deal, South Barracks, Nelson Street, Upper Walmer, Kingsdown, needs six weeks' section-211 notice to Dover District Council. TPO trees need a full 8-week application. I file both, as standard.
Most crown-reduction jobs in Deal fall in the £350 – £1,200 range. A single mature garden tree with a moderate reduction sits mid-range; a full clifftop wind-loading reduction on a two- or three-tree stand with limited access sits at the top. Very small ornamentals sit at the bottom. Fixed price after photos and postcode.
