Crown thinning: let the wind pass through, not push against.

What thinning actually does

Three things: reduces wind loading, lets more light through to the garden below, and lets air move through the canopy (reducing fungal load on species like sycamore and horse chestnut). The industry benchmark is a 10 to 30% density reduction: anything above that starts becoming a reduction rather than a thin, and starts stressing the tree. Cuts are made back to a lateral limb, never mid-branch, and are distributed so the canopy still looks natural from the ground.

Why thinning matters on the Deal coast

The prevailing wind is south-westerly, but the gardening problem is the cold, salt-laden easterlies off the Channel. RHS hardiness H4 to H5 exposure, H5 on the front line at Beach Street, Walmer seafront and the Kingsdown cliff. A dense mature canopy in that exposure loads the whole trunk under gusts; over time you get root movement, wind-throw risk, and salt scorch concentrated on the leeward side. Thinning is the pressure-relief job, done every 5 to 8 years on exposed specimens, less often on the sheltered Mill Hill inland trees.

Species notes

• Holm oak (Quercus ilex): the Walmer Castle front-line evergreen. Very responsive to thinning; late summer only, bleeds in spring.
• Sycamore, lime: the standard mature-garden thinning candidates in Mill Hill, Upper Deal and Sholden. Both throw water-sprouts after any cut; lime especially needs a return visit 12-18 months later to clean those up.
• Ash: assess for ash-dieback (Chalara) before any thinning work; advanced dieback makes climbing unsafe and the job becomes a fell.
• Horse chestnut: thinning helps air-flow against bleeding canker and leaf miner. Standard practice on the older Walmer villa specimens.

What thinning is not

Thinning is not the same as raising (that removes lower branches only) or reduction (that cuts the outline back). And it is emphatically not topping, the practice of cutting the main leaders back to stubs. I do not do topping; it invites decay, kills the tree's future shape, and is professionally indefensible.

Middle Street and Dover District Council paperwork

Middle Street was Kent's first conservation area, designated 1968. Any tree with a stem 75mm or over at 1.5m needs six weeks' section-211 notice to Dover District Council before the chainsaw runs. That rule applies across all seven Deal-Walmer CAs (Middle Street, Upper Deal, South Barracks, Nelson Street, Upper Walmer, Kingsdown). TPO trees need a full application with 8 weeks' notice. I check both and file the paperwork.

Most crown-thinning jobs in Deal fall in the £250 – £800 range, depending on tree size, access, and how much of the canopy needs work.
