Deadwooding: the safety job, done annually.

Why it matters, especially on the Deal coast

The salt-laden easterlies at Beach Street, Walmer seafront and the Kingsdown cliff kill leaves and small twigs on the leeward side of exposed trees. That dieback builds up. Left alone, dead branches are the ones that come down in the next gusty spell, usually on a driveway, path or garden bench. Annual deadwooding is cheap, quick, and preventative. It's the routine job that stops the bigger emergency call-out later.

What we take, what we leave

• Any branch over 25mm diameter that is dead, snapped, hanging, or diseased.
• Fungal fruiting bodies (bracket fungus, honey fungus rhizomorphs) get flagged and photographed, as some indicate serious structural decay that needs a deeper look.
• Habitat wood: a small proportion of standing deadwood is deliberately left where it's safe to do so, because it hosts insects, fungi and cavity-nesting birds. Not every dead branch is a problem to be removed.

Ash-dieback triage

Ash first, always. Chalara ash-dieback is now widespread across east Kent. Signs to look for: crown dieback from the top down, black or brown lesions on twigs and shoots, and diamond-shaped lesions on the trunk. On a badly infected ash, the wood becomes brittle and unsafe for climbing: deadwooding is not the right job, felling is. I do the assessment as part of every quote where an ash is in scope. If the tree is over 75mm at 1.5m and inside a Deal CA, the section-211 notice still applies to a fell.

Species notes for Deal

• Salt-tolerant hedging as small trees (Tamarix, Olearia, Escallonia): quick deadwooding jobs on the seafront and Kingsdown clifftop; the salt burn makes it a near-annual cycle.
• Holm oak (Quercus ilex): the Walmer Castle front-line evergreen. Sheds inner leaves and small dead twigs; annual tidy keeps the shape.
• Sycamore, lime, horse chestnut: the standard mature-garden species on Mill Hill and Upper Deal. Annual deadwooding cycle.
• Beech, hornbeam: inland only. Late-summer job.
• Fruit trees: apple and pear over Upper Deal orchard remnants; deadwooding restores fruiting on old neglected specimens.

Middle Street and DDC

Deadwooding a purely dead branch is generally exempt from section-211 notice, but the moment you're cutting into live tissue on a CA tree with a stem 75mm or over at 1.5m, six weeks' notice to Dover District Council applies. That covers Middle Street (Kent's first CA, 1968), Upper Deal, South Barracks, Nelson Street, Upper Walmer and Kingsdown. TPO trees need a full 8-week application even for deadwood. I check both and file where needed.

Pricing

Most single-tree deadwooding jobs in Deal fall in the £180 – £550 range. A small ornamental sits at the bottom; a mature Walmer villa horse chestnut with heavy salt-burn and full access sits toward the top.
