Coastal windbreak hedges for Deal and Walmer: choosing a species, positioning it and what it will cost.
The stretch of coast between Deal seafront and the Kingsdown clifftops is one of the most exposed in Kent. The north-easterly comes straight off the North Sea in winter. The south-westerly swings in behind it in spring. A garden hedge planted as a windbreak can reduce wind speed for a distance of ten times its height, which on a 2m hedge means 20m of protection. But the wrong species in the wrong position can make turbulence worse, not better. This is what I have learned from planting and managing windbreak hedges on the CT14 shore.
Before you cut or plant: things worth checking first
A windbreak hedge planted in the wrong place can become a legal problem before it ever becomes a wind problem:
- Conservation areas. If your plot is in or near one of Deal's seven conservation areas, check whether any existing hedge stems are covered by a tree preservation order or s.211 notice requirement before removing or reducing them. The conservation area rules guide covers this in detail.
- Boundary ownership. A windbreak hedge planted on the boundary line affects your neighbour too, particularly if it grows tall. Know which side of the line is yours before you plant. See the boundary ownership guide.
- High hedge rules. An evergreen hedge over 2m tall that affects your neighbour's enjoyment of their garden can be subject to a DDC notice under the Anti-social Behaviour Act 2003. Build maintenance access into your planting scheme from day one.
- PPE for cutting. Eye protection, ear defenders for powered tools, gloves, and an RCD adaptor for any corded electric trimmer. A wasp-nest check before starting is not optional.
Eight species compared for windbreak performance on the CT14 coast.
Not all of these are suitable for the exposed seafront strip between the lifeboat station and Kingsdown. A few are second-line choices that work once an initial windbreak is established. The table covers the full range.

How a windbreak actually works, and why solid is wrong.
The rule that surprised most customers when I first explained it: a solid barrier (a close-board fence, a wall, or a very dense clipped hedge with no air movement through it) does not give the best wind protection. It deflects the wind upward and over, creating a turbulent eddy on the leeward side that can be as disruptive as the original wind, sometimes more so.
The best windbreak filters roughly 50 per cent of the wind, letting some through and slowing the rest. This produces a longer, calmer zone of protection on the sheltered side. At that permeability level, a 2m hedge protects a zone of around 20m behind it. A 3m hedge extends that to 30m. Griselinia clipped to a tight formal shape is actually slightly more solid than ideal; tamarisk and blackthorn, with their naturally open, feathery growth, filter wind at closer to the ideal ratio.
On the strip of gardens between Beach Street and the shoreline in Deal, and on the exposed upper plots at Kingsdown, the choice of species matters more than the choice of position. The wind is rarely predictable: the north-easterly off the Downs Roads in winter and the south-westerly that swings in behind it have different angles, and a hedge planted to block one may funnel the other straight into the garden. I generally recommend planting at an angle to the boundary line rather than square to it if the plot allows, or using a curved-profile hedge that deflects rather than blocks.
Single-row vs double-row vs mixed-species windbreak.
On most Deal and Walmer domestic plots, a single well-chosen row is enough. On the larger gardens at Sholden and upper Kingsdown, or on any plot directly facing the sea, a two-row approach gives noticeably better results and allows for species choices tailored to each layer.

The CT14 prevailing wind and where that leaves your hedge.
Deal and Walmer face predominantly north-east in terms of their most severe wind exposure. In winter, north-easterlies coming straight off the North Sea hit the shingle beach and the seafront terraces with nothing to interrupt them from the Low Countries. On Marine Road and South Barracks Road, a garden with any north-east aspect will feel the full force of this.
The secondary wind problem is the south-westerly, which wraps around the headland at Kingsdown in spring and catches gardens on the upper plots from an unexpected angle. A hedge planted square on the north-east boundary in one of those gardens can inadvertently channel the south-westerly straight down the garden. I note the orientation of the plot before I recommend where to put any new hedge.
For most seafront plots in Deal, the most useful windbreak position is the northern or north-eastern boundary, planted at or close to the front of the garden rather than set back. Setting a windbreak 3–4m back from the boundary loses the protection zone proportionately. If the front boundary is shared, a second-line hedge further back and slightly off-square to the coast can provide effective supplementary shelter without requiring boundary agreement with a neighbour.
At Kingsdown, the clifftop plots are their own case. The wind comes from multiple directions depending on the season, and the SSSI boundary limits what can be planted on or near the cliff edge. Griselinia and tamarisk are the two species I have seen work consistently well there without needing management that risks disturbing the SSSI vegetation. Griselinia: still the right default for most Walmer and Deal seafront gardens.
I have been asked why I still recommend griselinia when tamarisk is more salt-tolerant and blackthorn is denser. The answer is manageability. Griselinia clips to a clean vertical face, responds well to reduction if it gets ahead of itself, and can be bought pot-grown year-round so the planting season is not restricted to the bare-root autumn window. Hopes Grove Nurseries, based in Tenterden in the same county, has covered the basics of griselinia establishment and care in detail and it is the reference I give to customers who want to dig deeper. The key points for the CT14 coast: plant at 50 cm centres for a dense hedge, water through the first summer without fail on the free-draining shingle and alluvium ground that most Deal and Walmer gardens sit on, and do not take more than a third off the top in any single cut until the hedge has reached its target height.
Tamarisk is the better first-line choice for the most exposed plots, where a crisp formal hedge is less of a priority than getting something established. It is feathery and informal but exceptional at filtering wind on a raw seafront. It grows fast, costs less, and handles salt that would bronze and brown the edges of even a good griselinia. The limitation is that it cannot be clipped to a tight line: if a neat, formal boundary is what you want, tamarisk is not the right answer.
Elaeagnus x ebbingei is the species I find myself recommending more often than I used to, particularly for the second-row position in a double-row windbreak. The leaves are large, leathery and silver-backed, giving the hedge a distinctive look, and it performs as well as griselinia in salt wind without the same susceptibility to bronze discolouration from road spray. Slower to establish, and the large leaves need a careful cut rather than a fast machine pass, but it is worth considering on any plot where griselinia has already tried and failed.
Nesting season: windbreak hedges often hold more nests than you expect
UK Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, section 1 makes it an offence to intentionally take, damage or destroy an active wild bird's nest. The nesting season runs 1 March to 31 August. The fine is up to £5,000 per nest, with up to six months in prison.
Windbreak hedges are often denser and taller than formal boundary hedges and regularly hold more nesting activity, particularly tamarisk (which wrens and dunnocks use heavily) and blackthorn (a favourite of thrushes, whitethroats and linnets along the Kingsdown lanes). The safe cutting window is September to the end of February.

A note on the bare-root planting window.
Hawthorn and blackthorn are dramatically cheaper as bare-root plants bought from late October through to February. For a 10m mixed-native windbreak, bare-root from a UK nursery such as Hopes Grove Nurseries (Tenterden, Kent) or Hedges Direct can cost a third of the equivalent pot-grown price. The trade-off is that bare-root plants need to go in promptly after delivery and must be heeled in or planted immediately, not left in a corner of the garden for a fortnight. Griselinia and elaeagnus are not widely available bare-root; buy these pot-grown and plant after the worst frosts have passed in late March or April.
